It was a test all of us would hope to pass, but none of us really wants to take. A masked gunman points his weapon at a Christian and asks “Do you

__1__ God?” She knows that if she says “yes,” she’ll pay for her belief. But unfaithfulness to her Lord is unthinkable.

So, with what would be her last

__2__, she calmly answers “Yes, I believe in God.”

As you may have guessed, the event I’m describing took place last Tuesday in Littleton, Colorado.

As the Washington Post __3__, the two students who shot 13 people, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, did not choose their victims at random(隨意)—they were __4__ out of ugly prejudices(偏見).

Media coverage has focused on the killers’ hostility(敵意) toward racial minorities and athletes, but there was another group the pair __5__ every bit as much, if not more: Christians. And, there were plenty of them to hate at Columbine High School. According to some __6__ eight Christians—four Evangelicals and four Catholics—were killed.

Among them was Cassia Bernall. And it was Cassia who made the dramatic __7__ I’ve just described —fitting for a person whose __8__ movie was Brave Heart, in which the hero dies a martyr’s(殉教的) death.

Cassia was a 17-year-old junior with long blond hair that she wanted to __9__ and have made into wigs(假發(fā)) for cancer patients who had lost their hair through chemotherapy(化療). She was __10__ in her youth group at West Pool’s Community Church and was known for carrying a Bible to school.

Cassia was in the school library reading her Bible when the two young killers __11__ . According to witnesses, one of the killers pointed his gun at Cassia and asked, “Do you believe in God?” Cassia __12__ and then answered, “Yes, I believe in God.” “Why?” the gunman asked. Cassia did not have a chance to respond. The gunman had already shot her dead.

Since I have been in my new neighborhood, I have had the pleasure of meeting a few of my neighbors. My __13__ idea was to make small fruit baskets and leave them on each of my neighbors’ front porches(門廊) the night of Christmas Eve for them to find. I signed the cards: “Happy Holidays from 5104 Northumberland Road.”

I __14__ the friendly lady for last, since I was still not exactly sure where she lived. I __15__ decided upon a house down about where I met her each morning and felt relatively sure that it was hers.

This morning I noticed a small __16__ inside the mailbox. It was addressed simply—Resident, 5104 Northumberland Road. I opened the __17__ and took out a thank-you card. The card said, “Thank you for the lovely fruit basket you __18__ on the porch of Richard Kelly. It was very __19__ . Richard Kelly passed away half a month ago. He never stopped talking about how nice it was that someone remembered him in his time of __20__ . He really appreciated it.”

I was sincerely shocked. I had no idea who Richard Kelly was or that he had been gravely ill. I had left that __21__ lady’s basket on Mr Kelly’s porch by accident. I wanted to say by mistake, but that would be wrong. I believe that Richard Kelly was __22__ to have that basket. I hate that the lady did not get to __23__ a fruit basket from me, but I believe that if she knew what had happened, she would not have had the outcome any other way.

I feel blessed to have helped Richard Kelly’s last days be more cheerful. This just further reinforces(加強(qiáng)) my belief that there are never any __24__ in life.

About a year ago I remember getting a call from the school just as I came home after having driven 20 minutes to the school and 20 minutes back. “Mrs. Brown, your son

  __25__

us to call. He forgot his sports clothes. Can you come back to the school and drop them off?” I got very

  __26__

! I had already spent 40 minutes in the busy weekday morning traffic. I replied, “Sorry, I’m working at the moment. I’m afraid that my son needs to learn to be

__27__ .” Ouch. Yes, it was tough to do so, but I hated it that my son thought my only

  __28__

in life was to always be ready to do what he wanted.

So today, about a year later, the school called me again. This time my son got on the phone. “Mom, I’m really sorry but I forgot my sports clothes. Would you

  __29__

if you dropped them off for me?” His

  __30__

was genuinely sweet and unassuming(謙遜的). I decided to say

  __31__

. I had some flexibility in my schedule and more importantly, my son had the right

  __32__

—he was not assuming anything. When I arrived at the school and got to the main office, the school secretary

  __33__

that my son had been very reluctant to call me. While passing the clothes to my son, I told him that I would

  __34__

to do that sort of thing—__35__

he forgets something, I won’t come back to the school to drop it off.

Being a good parent requires delivering tough love sometimes because kids need to learn to be

  __36__

and manage things on their own. If you always do everything they want for them, they’ll never learn to look after themselves, and probably fail in today’s competitive world.

A person began reflecting on the people who had a positive effect on his life. In particular he remembered a woman teacher who had

  __37__

to instill(灌輸) in him a love of poetry. He had not seen or spoken to her for many years and took a moment to remember the effect she had on his life. He

  __39__

 ?。?/p>

“I cannot tell you how much your letter

  __40__

to me. I am in my eighties, living alone in a small room and cooking my own meals. You will be interested to know that I taught school for 50 years and yours is the first note of appreciation that I ever

. It came on a cold morning, and it

  __42__

me as nothing has in many years.”

  7.B the dramatic decision在這里指的是寧愿被殺死,也要說自己信奉上帝的生死抉擇。

  8.A 聯(lián)系下文in which the hero dies a martyr’s(殉教的) death,我們知道,因?yàn)椤队赂业男摹返闹魅斯珵榻塘x而死,與自己有同樣的信仰,因此這是她最喜歡的電影。

  (三)

  25.C 學(xué)生叫老師做事自然是禮貌地“請求”了,故選C。
