  A Memory of My Childhood

  孩時(shí)的回憶

One day, when I was six years old, my aunt came to see us from Shanghai. My parents and brother happened to be out then.

It was late in the afternoon. The room was a little dark. My aunt felt tired. I asked her to sit down and have a rest. “Where are your daddy and mummy, my dear?” asked Aunt. “ They have gone shopping and will be back in an hour. I’ll fetch a cup of tea for you, aunt.” When I went into the kitchen, a good idea came into my mind: After a long journey my aunt must be very hungry. I’ll give her a cup of milk instead of a cup of tea. When I opened the cupboard, I saw a bottle of ‘milk’powder in it. I poured a cup of the ‘milk’and gave it to my aunt. “ Thank you very much. It’s very kind of you,” she said. “ Please taste

the milk. Has it enough sugar?” My aunt took a sip of the ‘milk’and spilt it out at once. “ What is it, Reran?” she asked in surprise. “ It’s milk,” I said loudly and proudly. “ But it doesn’t taste like milk. Where did you get it?” I took aunt into the kitchen and showed the bottle to her. Oh, it turned out to be a bottle of washing powder!

In the evening my parents came back. When they heard what I did, my mother said to me with a smile, “ You are great. You have learned to entertain

  guests without us.”

Several years have passed. Now I am a middle school student. Every time my parents repeat the story, we have a good laugh over it.

  An Unforgettable Day

  難忘的一天

Late one afternoon, I was on my way home from school. I walked slowly along the street with my head dropped. The scenes on both sides of the street were beautiful, but I had no interest in them at all. I walked and walked, thinking of what had happened that day. Just a few minutes before the second class began that afternoon, I was asked to go to the teacher’s office. I heard my teacher talking to my mother with anger. “How could you dare to go to see a film this morning without permission?” Mother said at the top of her voice, slapping me in the face heavily. I looked at mother, dumb founded...

I walked more slowly, for I had seen my house ahead, where mother was always standing at the door, smiling at me, at this time every day. But now, she wasn’t there. My heart was beating faster. I even didn’t dare to open the door for fear that mother should beat again. Not knowing what to do, I sat on the ground near the door, blaming myself for what I had done. I was lost in deep agony. Suddenly a soft hand patted me on the head. I looked up, seeing mother standing beside me. I couldn’t help crying, “Mum!” tears rolling down my cheeks.

  Awards Day

  頒獎(jiǎng)之日

I came home as fast as I could. As I entered the house, I hugged my mom and said, “Mom, I won an award! I won the City of BeiJing’s excellence award for essay writing! Sunday is the awards ceremony and I want you to come with me.” Mom held me close and nodded happily.

Sunday arrived. Mom and I woke up early to arrive at the clothing store and we both bought one dress suit of excellent quality. It took us the whole morning to get ready and we were finally ready to go. The awards ceremony started. Through the sound of clapping, and the TV cameras chasing around, the host of the ceremony called award winners up one by one. At that time, I was so excited that my heart was about to jump out of my chest. I waited for my name but at the end, it wasn’t called! I misunderstood! It was only the first and second place winners that were called up to the stage. I was an ordinary winner just like a normal person in the audience. Tears ran down my cheek. I looked at mom and the new clothes that we were wearing, and then I thought about how we took all morning to get ready. I felt ashamed.

During this hard time, I felt mom’s hand on my shoulder. She came up to me and whispered in my ear, “Achieve it next time!” Mom’s short sentence made me feel warm inside. I suddenly held in my tears and lifted up my head.

  Mother’s Birthday

  母親的生日

Last Friday evening, my father told me that it would be my mother’s 40th birthday the next day. When he said this, he was very excited and asked me, “What should we buy for your mother’s birthday?” I told him that I couldn’t decide until we went to the shop the next day. Father agreed and said that he would wake me up very early the next morning. Father really kept his promise. At seven o’clock the next morning, I was woken up by my father’s knock at my door. When I opened the door, my father said, “Breakfast was ready.” “You’ve done a good job, father.” To my great surprise, my father replied, “ It’s not me. It’s your mother. She always gets breakfast ready at this time. She always does this, you know.”

Having had our breakfast, my father and I went shopping. I told my father to help my mother with the housework first. Father said sadly that my mother didn’t allow us to do that. When I invited my mother to go together with us to the shop, my mother said with a smile that she wanted to take a rest at home. Father and I had been to many shops before we could buy her a beautiful coat and a large birthday cake. When we got home, mother had finished doing all the housework. She sat at the table with various delicious dishes served. Mother didn’t take a rest on her birthday!

  支持北京申辦2008年奧運(yùn)會(huì)

At lunch yesterday, we learned through TV there would be a signature drive in Wuyi Square today. We decided to join in.

Father, mother and I left for the square at 8 this morning. When we arrived, we saw thousands of people there. Some TV reporters were covering the event. Like many others, an old man and his grandson were signing on a long piece of cloth, which read “Support Beijing’s Bid for the 2008 Olympics.”Some foreigners told me that they also came for the signature.

After signing, I was interviewed. “I think this is an instructive event,” I said, “We’re eagerly expecting the Olympics to be held in Beijing.”

During the holiday I took part in a special summer camp with my classmates. There we made some new friends who were senior school students from London, Britain.

As hosts, we showed them around many places of interest in Beijing, such as the Palace Museum, the Great Wall and the Summer Palace.I told them about the great changes taking place in Beijing. They said Beijing was quite different from what they had heard and it was as beautiful as London.

Meanwhile, we improved our spoken English with their help.I think the summer camp is of great value.
