With his unique black mane (鬃毛)and impressive stature(身材), 13-year-old Cecil was a popular tourist attraction at the 3.6 million-square-acre Hwange National Park(萬基國家公園) in Zimbabwe (津巴布韋).

Cecil was head of a pride of lions that includes 12 cubs(幼崽), but the well-known lion was shot and killed in early July by American dentist Walter J. Palmer.

Cecil’s death has already sparked an international outcry (強(qiáng)烈抗議) with many calling for an end to hunting endangered animals and for Palmer to be extradited(引渡) to Zimbabwe to stand trial.

Professor David Macdonald, the head of the Oxford University research program that monitored the daily movements of Cecil and dozens of other lions, is deeply saddened by Cecil’s death. Macdonald hopes the death can inspire the public to take an interest in lion conservation.

Macdonald says many of the lions tracked by the program have been shot

and killed. “The background to this story is that there is a crisis for lions throughout much of Africa.” He says.

African lion populations have fallen almost 60 percent over the past thirty decades, and as few as 32,000 of them remain in the wild, according to the International Fund for Animal Welfare(國際愛護(hù)動物基金會).

  “And as troubling as it

is, the rarer these hunted animals become, the more hunter s are willing to pay to kill them,” said Jeff Flockedn, the fund’s North American regional director.

In addition to excessive hunting, lions throughout Africa also continue to face threats that include conflicts with local farmers, loss of habitat and risk of traffic and railway collisions(碰撞).

  1. Internationally, people’s attitude towards Walter J. Palmer’s behavior is ________.

  A. Understandable

  B. Unpardonable

  C. Unpredictable

  D. Uncontrollable

  2. According to the text, how many African lions lived in the wild thirty years ago?

  A. 80,000

  B. 48,000

  C. 53,000

  D. 60,000

  3. African lions are facing the following threats except ________.

  A. their conflicts with local farmers.

  B. the loss of their habitats

  C. people’s excessive hunting

  D. the increase in the number of their natural enemies

  4. The best title of the text might be ________.

  A. The Death of Cecil-an African Lion

AB. The Current state of All African Lions

  C. The Threats Facing African Lions

  D. The Appeal for an End to Hunting Endangered Animals

根據(jù)第六段中的信息“African lion populations have fallen almost 60 percent over the past thirty decades,…”,可知,在剛剛過去的30年里,非洲獅的數(shù)量減少了60%,現(xiàn)在僅有32,000頭非洲獅生活在野外,由此可以推斷,三十年前生活在野外的非洲獅的數(shù)量為:32,000 / (1-0.6)= 80,000。

It is probably the strangest sport anyone has ever invented. And at first sight, it looks like the easiest. Competitors have to do two things. The first is to stand still. The second is to place their hands anywhere on the body of a car, and keep it there.

This is where things start getting difficult. Lots of people are doing the same thing. And the winner of the“handathon”contest is the person who can carry on doing it for the longest time. That person gets to own the car.

It still seems to be an easy thing to do. At the beginning it is. Anyone can stand still. But when the contest has been going for four or five days, standing still seems like the most difficult job in the world. And keeping the hand in place over this time becomes an act of serious attention. After a few days, the hand seems to belong to someone else—someone who wants to go home and get some sleep.

Competitors are allowed to take a five-minute break every hour to eat, drink or do whatever else is necessary. No one is allowed to lean on the car for support. Winners need to be able to show great powers of attention. They also need to be able to develop special skills.

Maybe the popularity of the handathon is due to the fact that it is not necessary to be a trained athlete to enter. Entrants in the Longview handathon certainly don’t seem to do much preparation. Most say they will prepare by“getting lots of sleep”. Others say they will“eat healthy food”or“pray for success”. The whole event gives ordinary people the chance to do something interesting and win something in the end.

Handathons are competitions, but there is little rivalry(敵對)between competitors. They help each other out and keep each other’s spirits up. People who drop out early return with food, drink and encouragement.

  1. The reason why the sport is called“handathon”is that competitors .

  A. cover a long distance

  B. keep hands in place for long

  C. wave hands as long as possible

  D. do the same thing as in a marathon

  2. What ability is likely to be needed most in a handathon?

  A. Standing without any support.

  B. Not leaning on the car.

  C. Eating and drinking in five minutes.

  D. Having strong powers of attention.

Winners need to be able to show great powers of attention.

  3. Why is handathon popular?

  A. Someone can win with special training.

  B. It doesn’t need to make any preparation.

  C. Anyone who is interested can join in it.

  D. People get along well with each other in it.

Maybe the popularity of the handathon is due to the fact that it is not necessary to be a trained athlete to enter.

  4. Which of the following about handathon is NOT right?

  A. The person who takes part in it should stand still.

  B. The person who takes part in it has to place his hands anywhere on the body of a car, and keep it there.

  C. The person who takes part in it can have a break during the course of the competition.

Is geography important? Here's a question for you to answer.

What have the following countries got in common: Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, Iceland and Madagascar?

Quite easy if you can picture them on the globe — they are all islands. All of these nations are surrounded by sea.

What have these five nations got in common? Hungary, Botswana, Kazakhstan, Paraguay and Liechtenstein. They are all landlocked. In other words, in contrast to the first five countries whose coastline forms their border, the second five have no

coastline at all. If you are a Hungarian or a Paraguayan, you have to pass through somebody else's country if you want to go to the beach.

Liechtenstein is even more of a geographical phenomenon; it is “doubly landlocked” because the countries that surround it — Austria and Switzerland are also landlocked. There is only one other country in the world in a similar position, Uzbekistan, which is surrounded by five other landlocked countries. Go and have a look at the map if you want to know which.

So how do countries become landlocked? If you are Swiss or Nepalese, you have probably never thought things could be any other way. Switzerland's mountains, like the Himalayas, have formed a natural boundary for thousands of years. But there are borders. Where one country ends and another begins is not something that is fixed for all time.

There are countries like Ethiopia and Bolivia which did have a bit of coast but don't any more. Does it matter? The Ethiopians are not happy that the creation of Eritrea means they now have to use another country's port, when before they had a long coastline on the Red Sea.

But why does coastline matter so much? Throughout history people have preferred to live near the sea, and not just for the fish. Sea means trade, which means wealth. Think of the great successful cities like Singapore, New York or Hong Kong today. Russia has fought several wars over the centuries so that its ships could have access to the Baltic, the Black Sea and the Pacific.
