(2024·江蘇四市六校聯(lián)考)Its early January and for many, it’s the right time of year to hit “reset” and (re)commit to all the things you want to happen in 2024: exercise, lose weight, and finally learn Chinese, etc. Our lists have been made, but the outcomes tend to let us down.

We may start off strong, but we can get steered off course before we realize it. You would have gone to the gym, but the delivery is coming in the morning so you have to wait for it. You did great last week keeping off the desserts, so what the heck — it?s a birthday party, you deserve to have just one! You were totally up for going to that networking event, but your husband is away and the kids need you. Your mind becomes masterful at creating those convincing “reason” why you couldn?t do something.

Of course, there are many times when we fight through the various circumstances that present themselves to achieve something that matters to us, but then there are other times when we buy into the excuses and stories we tell ourselves to defend why not to do something.

I?ve worked with many successful people over the years, and they frequently share similar habits and routines that make up the kind of mindset that is good at achieving goals and persevering through any circumstances. I?ve often taken note of them, and here are the top five most easy-to-do actions that can be applied to any goal or commitment you have. I find these especially helpful as we begin a fresh new year of goals.

  1.GET EARLY WINS

You cannot underestimate how much this fuels your commitment. Define what “early wins” look like and make sure that they’re in your control. For example, if you said, “exercise four times weekly”, thats in your hands, so make sure you meet or exceed this number consistently. It fuels you to continue.

  2.TRACK POSITIVE PROGRESS

Its important to know what you’ve accomplished. Mostly we focus on what ISN’T happening. This is bringing down your energy level and mood. Keep a notebook or journal (digitally or paper) of what is getting done so you can visibly see progress. If you have several goals, keep different journals.

  3.COMMIT TO OTHERS

The more you share your goals with others, the more you become responsible for taking action. Take it a step further and enlist someone you will “report” to and share your progress. Make sure this person push you and not let you off the hook.

  4.MAKE MISTAKES AND MOVE ON

You won’t be perfect. When you’re not, declare, embrace and own it, then move on fast. Recommit and get right back in the game. Also, disable your rearview mirrors (后視鏡). What happened before doesnt have to influence what happens next.

  5.DEFINE YOUR OWN SUCCESS

There is no “right” way to get to your goal. Its yours and you’re the author. Clearly map out the route to the top with milestones and what success looks like. The more clear you are on not only the “what” but the “how”, the easier it will be to take action.

The goals you create are hugely important, but in fact the most exciting part is the self-discovery in the process of getting there. Make this year an amazing year of breaking barriers and being “unreasonable” with yourself to achieve success.

  Ⅱ.書面表達(滿分25分)

  (2024·南京師大附中二模)請閱讀下面短文,并按照要求用英語寫一篇150詞左右的文章。

Behavioral scientists have done countless experiments to prove that any human being tends to repeat an act which has been immediately followed by a pleasant result. In one such experiment, a number of schoolchildren were divided into three groups and given arithmetic tests daily for five days. One group was consistently praised for its previous performance; another group was criticized; the third was ignored.

Not surprisingly, those who were praised improved dramatically. Those who were criticized improved also but not so much. And the scores of the children who were ignored hardly improved at all. Interestingly, the brightest children were helped just as much by criticism as by praise, but the less able children reacted badly to criticism, who needed praise the most. Yet the latter are the very youngsters who, in most schools, fail to get the pat on the back.

To give praise costs the giver nothing but a moment’s thought and a moment’s effort — perhaps a quick phone call to pass on a compliment (稱贊), or five minutes spent writing an appreciative letter. It is such a small investment — and yet consider the results it may produce. “I can live for two months on a good compliment,” said Mark Twain.

  Ⅱ.參考范文:

A scientific experiment proves that children who receive constant praises do improve a lot in their performances. So, let’s be generous enough to give praise to people around.

Praising others is a supreme state of life, for praising and being praised both bring pleasure. Receivers can feel the sense of accomplishment, because their efforts are acknowledged by others, which will strengthen their inner motivation. Meanwhile, the givers can make their own hearts full of love, thus establishing the healthy and harmonious interpersonal relationships.

When I was in junior high school, I had much difficulty in learning English and lost interest in it. But Mum praised and encouraged me for even smallest achievements. I worked harder and gradually made great progress. Now I can speak English fluently and have won many awards.

Praise is powerful. It will bring joy not only into others’ lives, but also into our own.
